SHP Traffic Calming Project

The Kansas City Public Works Department has partnered with the Kansas State University to study the effects of traffic calming in Kansas City with South Hyde Park being identified as an initial testing area. To better understand different types of traffic calming measures, this study will collect baseline data as well as post installation data.

The four street segments (41st Street from Holmes to Campbell; Kenwood Avenue from 41st to 43rd; 43rd Street from Holmes to Campbell; and the intersection of 43rd & Campbell) will be observed using pneumatic road tubes. These tubes will have no impact on the road or drivers and the data that is collected will be completely anonymous. These devices will be used to track speed and traffic volume data with observation occurring over a 48 hour period during the week.

From this data, traffic calming measures will be designed and implemented using temporary materials which will again be observed for 48 hours. The outcome of this study will be a final design proposal that will use the information gathered to inform a design which aims to make streets safer with increased social and environmental functionality.
